“The best place I’ve worked. won’t be leaving anytime soon!”
I have been working at American Family Insurance full-time (More than a year)
Flexible hours, student loan repayment program, fantastic health benefits, PTO is very generous especially for new hires, paid parental leave. The people are awesome! Fun culture, the company and leadership truly care about people.
Not as diverse as it could be, but they are making huge strides!

“Great company to work for”
I have been working at American Family Insurance full-time (Less than a year)
Great first time salary position with benefits. The company is well established within its market and is continuously growing.
Insurance is fairly difficult to learn.

“Great Benefits, Shooting themselves in the foot.”
I have been working at American Family Insurance full-time (More than 3 years)
Great Benefits, pay is decent and starts at $15 for all employees.
Shooting themselves in the foot by forcing their departments to keep employment numbers lower than necessary. They are doing this in pursuit of an in company goal.
This would normally be fine but work is building up as we don’t have the manpower to do it. There is also very little advancement opportunity as no other departments are hiring.
Advice to Management
You need to spend money to make money. We’re getting more business which is great, but more business means more work. If you don’t have the people to handle that then the business is going to go away.

American Family Insurance Response
“Good company, bad agents.”
I worked at American Family Insurance full-time (Less than a year)
On the corporate side, excellent training opportunities in regards to their products. Information and services assistance readily available. Ease of use and systems once trained in. If you like to work independently, have experience in the field previously, do not need or want guidance, this might be a good fit for you.
From an agency standpoint, and this does not speak for all of American Family, but in my position there was no guidance or leadership present at all. Once I finished training through the corporate system, I was basically left to the wolves. I enjoyed my position and experienced great success but when something went wrong (even without my knowledge or understanding) I was held accountable, and not given the chance for any learning opportunities. No employee benefits, there is a “cost sharing” health plan but this is not even remotely realistic for 99% of employees. An employer funded IRA account was promised after one year of employment, only to find that I was let go for “not fitting in” to the work place a week before my anniversary date (which as it turns out was a reoccurring trend for this agent). Little to no opportunity for wage or position advancement, though agents will pitch this in interview situations, it is a dishonest and unrealistic hiring tactic.
Advice to Management
A universal training system for agency staff, a designated HR support team so that agency staff is not left in the dust with no accountability.
